I don't know what exactly you refer to by 'undercurrent' - Is it the idea of the story or the motivation that you didn't understand??

Very well written story...reminded me of the final scene in Phantom of the Opera where Raoul finds a rose placed on Christine's grave by the phantom...that screenshot would have fitted the story perfectly.
